Martha Atiemo
Martha Atiemo is a product of Nursing Training College, Koforidua where she obtained a certificate in General Nursing in 1994. Upon completion, she worked as a general nurse at the then Central Hospital now Regional Hospital in Koforidua. Between 1994. In 1999, her diligent work gave her the opportunity to undertake the Midwifery course at the Midwifery Training School, Korle-Bu where she successfully completed in 2000. She was then re-posted to the Central Hospital Koforidua to practice as a Nurse–Midwife. In 2005 Martha Atiemo joined the School of Nursing, University of Ghana and successfully graduated with Bachelor of Arts degree in Nursing in 2008. Martha also holds a Master’s degree in Public Health (Population and Reproductive health) awarded by Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 2015.
Martha works currently as a Deputy Chief Health Tutor at Nursing and Midwifery Training College. She is a member of the Academic Board and the Programme Head for the Post-auxiliary Midwifery programme. She is also a chief examiner for the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana. She has mentored and groomed several midwifery students into mature practitioners and academicians. Her passion includes preparing teaching and learning materials for trainee midwives during practical sessions. She also organizes “Objective Structured Clinical Examination” (OSCE) for nursing and midwifery students. Martha Atiemo participates in test item construction for Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana.
Martha is an experienced Nurse and a Midwife with several years of experience in Post-Partum Family Planning (PPFP); Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC). Furthermore, she has been a preceptor helping student midwives to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes using evidence-based and best practices in midwifery. She assists in managing the ward, and also serves as a clinical examiner for the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana.
Furthermore, Martha is a researcher and a contributor to manuals development and capacity building. She was a member of the team that wrote: the first and second editions of “Reference Manual for Preceptorship in Nursing and Midwifery Education funded by Maternal and Child Survival Programme of USAID (MCSP) / MOH; Reference Manual for Simulation laboratories in Midwifery Education; Facilitator guide to the reference manual for preceptorship in nursing and midwifery education (MCSP/GCNM) JHPIEGO/MCHIP/USAID/ACNM/MOH; e-Learning for Midwifery and Community Health Training Schools by JHPIEGO/MCSP/USAID/MOH.
Martha is a trainer and has facilitated workshops to build capacity in aspects of midwifery care. An example is a three week training module for preceptorship for Nurses and Midwives by the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCNM /) and MCSP- JHPIEGO.
