Mavis Christiana Apatu

Mavis Christiana Apatu is a Deputy Director of Nursing Services (DDNS) `with over 26 years’ experience in providing consistent and dedicated quality clinical family planning and reproductive health (RH) services at the international, national including regional, district, and community levels. She is in-Charge of the RH Unit, Obstetric and Gynaecological and Emergency Departments of the Greater Accra Regional Ridge Hospital. She has been integrally involved with the development of RH policies, FP protocols and operational guidelines.Mavis holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health (2012) from the University of Liverpool, UK; a post graduate Diploma in Reproductive Health at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK (2005) and a certificate in Health Administration and Management at Ghana Institute of management and Public Administration (GIMPA).
Her career has provided her with the opportunity for developing critical expertise in the training of service providers (doctors, nurses midwives) and students in Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH)/ Family Planning (FP) Standardized RH Counseling, Infection Prevention & Control, Management of STIs and Cervical Cancer Screening using the Visual Inspection of the Cervix with Acetic Acid (VIA), Pap Smear, Colposcopy and treatment of pre-cancerous cells (Cryotherapy). She has been part of a pioneering team for the introduction of Cervical Cancer Screening using VIA in Ghana. She has regularly provided Facilitator/Consultant expertise nationally and internationally (Freetown, Sierra Leone, Bamenda, Cameroon and Banjul, The Gambia, Togo etc.) for Training of Trainers (TOT) in Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC), Supportive Supervision, as well as Counseling at various workshops among others.
At the Global Meeting on Preventing Cervical Cancer in a low Resource Setting in Bangkok, Thailand (2005), she had the privilege to demonstrate the application of Cryotherapy in treating Pre-Cancerous Lesion. She has worked with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) as a National Trainer/Supervisor for Clinical Family Planning/SRH and Comprehensive Abortion Care (CAC), a lead trainer and a member of Ipas Global Trainers’ Network. Involved in additional duties as a National Trainer and supervisor for supportive supervision.
Furthermore, Mavis has had very successful collaborative experiences with several development partners such as JHPIEGO, Willows Foundation, CEDEP, P.P.A.G, USAID, Engender Health, Quality Health Partners (QHP), Ipas Ghana, AWARE- RH, MarieStopes International Ghana & Sierra Leone/BlueStar, Focus Region Health Project and UNFPA/ Ministry of Health -Sierra Leone, WHO and Systems for Health Ghana.
