Olivia Nyarko Mensah
Olivia Nyarko Mensah (Rev. Mrs. Olivia Eshun) is a highly skilled nurse educator, practitioner, a pediatric nurse specialist and a leader. Her diverse teaching career and clinical practice spans over 15 years.
Academically, Olivia is a product of Apam Secondary School and Prince of Peace Girls’ Secondary Schools, University of Ghana, University of Education Winneba and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Olivia is currently pursuing PhD programmes in Pediatrics and Nursing. Olivia holds the following credentials: MPhil (Nursing), MA (Educational Leadership), BA (Nursing with Psychology) and Diploma in Education.
Professionally, Olivia is a Registered Nurse and a Pediatric Nurse specialist. She is also a Deputy Chief Health Tutor at the Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Kumasi, Ghana. Olivia is a proud Fellow of the Ghana College of Nurse and Midwives (GCNM), a Fellow of the African Pediatric Fellowship Programme and a a member of Chi Omicron-at-Large Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau. She is a lead faculty at the GCNM/ SickKids-Canada PNEP, Kumasi site. Olivia has been instrumental in various faculty trainings and in many curriculum developments and reviews. She has contributed tremendously in the provision evidence-based specialist training.
Olivia’s area of expertise is in quality improvement in nursing and midwifery practice and education. Prior to becoming a nurse educator, she served as a Nurse-Clinician in some districts in Ghana and further sharpened her practical skills at the neonatal unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Ghana.
She actively served as a clinical instructor and a lecturer for some universities and training Colleges in the Kumasi Metropolis. For more than a decade, Olivia has been influential in leading and coordinating preceptorship, coaching and mentorship programs. She has hosted several training programmes and workshops on nursing and midwifery topics.
Olivia demonstrates a very strong emotional intelligence, is a strategic thinker and demonstrates excellent teaching skills. Olivia is also a zealous nurse researcher who focuses on bridging the gap between theory and practice.
Her current research is geared towards navigating the interactions in the Ghanaian pediatric unit with the aim of developing a grounded theory for quality improvements. She is also currently engaged in a study aimed at building strategies to empower women living with Obstetric Fistula in Ghana.
